Cook Holiday Dinners While Being Energy Efficient
When the holidays come around, the kitchen is constantly used to prepare all of those traditional holiday delicacies. One thing is for sure, not only can the temperature in your kitchen rise, but also your bill.
Did you know that cooking accounts for 4.5% of total energy use in U.S. homes? This doesn’t include the energy associated with refrigeration, hot water heating, and dishwashing. When you add these together, that means that as much as 15% of the energy in the average American home is used in the kitchen.
Don’t open the oven door
You may have already read some of our thanksgiving blogs mentioning this energy-saving tip. We repeat it so much because it can be an important factor that makes an impact on your energy consumptions during the long holiday cooking hours. Every time the oven door is opened, the temperature inside is reduced by as much as 25 degrees, which forces your oven to work even harder, resulting in using more energy to get back to the proper cooking temperature. If you need to check on a dish, consider looking through the oven window to view your meal.
Give your stove top burners a break
Give your stovetop burners a break. What do we mean by this? For example, if you have an electric stovetop with those shiny metal reflectors underneath the burners, you probably gnash your teeth over cleaning them. However it’s important to clean them because the cleaner they are the less energy they have to use to reach the proper temperature to cook meals.
Try using your slow cooker more often
Set it and forget it! Not only does this allow you to prioritize your time on other items of your holiday to-do list, but putting them to work more often instead of the oven or stovetop can mean significant energy savings. For example, the average toaster oven can use up to half the energy of the average electric stove over the same cooking time.
