In the past 10 to 15 years, solar energy capacity in the U.S. has rapidly grown, making solar a significant part of the power grid. Solar power electricity generation continues to grow nationwide, making up the majority of new electricity generation capacity in 2024.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), solar energy is expected to account for a significant portion of the new electricity generating capacity additions in the U.S. through 2025, with a projected 75% growth in solar power generation from 2023 to 2025. This growth means that combined solar and wind energy generation would account for more U.S. generating capacity than coal—a major step forward in the country’s movement toward renewable electricity.

If U.S. solar capacity continues to grow in this way, the generating capacity of all renewable sources in the U.S. could overtake that of natural gas within the next few years.

Planned Solar Energy Additions for 2025

The EIA has also stated that developers and power plant owners plan to add 30 gigawatts (GW) of new utility-scale generating capacity to the U.S. power grid by 2025, primarily through battery storage projects.

Texas continues to be a national leader in the year-over-year growth of solar electricity generation, followed by California, the state that’s still producing the most solar power overall. Together, these two states accounted for 41% of the planned new solar energy generating capacity in the U.S. in 2023.

Battery Storage Expansion in 2025

Battery storage has also grown steadily over the last few years and is expected to continue to do so in 2025. The EIA projects that the country will add 9 gigawatts of new capacity. Storage systems are often installed with new solar or wind power projects to store excess electricity that they generate for later use, expanding wind and solar energy benefits.

According to the Environment America Research and Policy Center, over 70% of the United States’ battery storage capacity is concentrated in the two leading states in renewable energy, California and Texas, both of which boast the highest solar and wind energy generating capacity in the U.S. Solar energy trends suggest that Texas and California’s contribution to overall generating capacity will continue to play a major role in the growth of the solar sector.

Other Renewable Energy Expansion in 2025

Solar power isn’t the only renewable energy sector that stands to grow significantly in 2025. Wind energy generating capacity is also expected to grow by 11%, and hydropower is expected to increase by 9.5%.

Combined, all renewable energy sources in the U.S. currently account for nearly 30% of total national generating capacity, and that percentage is expected to continue growing. In addition, the capacity of fossil fuels like natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy is expected to decrease throughout 2025, replaced by the steady growth of renewable energy sources.
