The year 2020 was unpredictable. As many of us had to stay indoors, home improvements became a form of entertainment. This doesn't mean that 2021 won't bring more home improvement projects our way, of course. However, it's important to keep in mind our home's energy efficiency when making improvements.

Today's topic is windows. If you're thinking of replacing your windows, it may be important to consider replacing them with energy efficient windows that could help your home's energy efficiency during the entire year.

Energy efficient windows could improve indoor comfort and filter out damaging ultraviolet light, while potentially saving you hundreds of dollars a year on heating and cooling costs. When shopping for windows it's important to keep in mind the "U-Factor" of your windows.

What is the U-Factor?

According to Energy.gov, "The U-Factor measures how well the window insulates. While the U-Factor can take any value, in general for windows it ranges from 0.20 to 1.20. The lower the U-Factor, the better the window insulates."

Save energy by selecting ENERGY STAR® windows by following these next steps:

  • Try to look for ENERGY STAR labeled windows.
  • Try to determine the U-factor standards based on your climate zone.
  • Consider your homes window orientation.
  • Ask about ENERGY STAR options that may be eligible for federal tax credits and other incentives.
