Get & Stay Organized

Your moving to-do list is likely a mile long, and to keep track of all the logistics, it’s critical to stay organized. One of the best relocating tips is to create a list of all the tasks you need to complete in a way that works best for you, whether in an Excel spreadsheet, a Google doc, or a list on your phone.

Research Your Options

If you’re moving because of a new job, find out if your company offers assistance with relocation. Take time to estimate the cost of your move, including hiring movers or renting a moving truck, deposits on a new place to live, and shipping any valuables. The more you know ahead of time, the better prepared you will feel when the big day arrives that you know how to relocate successfully.

Visit Your New Location

While reading about your new home online can certainly be helpful, nothing beats seeing the city or town in person. Set aside a day or a weekend to visit and explore. Book an appointment with a realtor to view potential houses or apartments. Research the schools if you have children. Find out what your commute to work will be like and what local businesses you may be interested in checking out.

Determine Cost of Living

Before you move, one of the best relocation tips is to research the cost of living in your new location so you can plan and budget accordingly. Talk to your coworkers at your new company about recommendations on school districts, places to live, and other factors about your new home.

Set a Budget for Your Move

Many expenses go into moving, from purchasing supplies to hiring movers. Review your list of tasks and add a budget item for each one. Some tasks may not require money, while others could add up quickly. A clear budget can keep you from overspending and ensure you’re in a good financial position when you arrive in your new location.

Find a New Place to Live

Whether you plan to buy a house or rent, it takes time to view housing options and choose the right one for you and your family. Look at online listings and visit properties in person to check out the neighborhoods.

Choose a Moving Date

Once you know where you’re going to live and work, you can plan a date for your move. This gives you a set due date for all the tasks on your to-do list, including booking movers to assist you with transporting your belongings from your current location to your new one. Take time to research moving companies and book early so your move is handled on your schedule and within your budget.

Declutter

One of the best tips for relocation to another state is to declutter your current home. Start going through your belongings to see what you need to take with you, what you can sell, and what you can donate. Relocation is a great time to pare down your belongings, making it easier to move and reducing your moving costs. The less you pack and take with you, the better.

Pick Up Supplies

If you plan to pack and move everything yourself, you’ll need plenty of supplies, including boxes, tape, and bubble wrap. Well in advance of your moving date, start purchasing everything you’ll need to get packed up and on the road.

Update Your Address

Fill out change of address forms with the post office so your mail is forwarded to your new home. Also, update your address with any financial institutions, phone companies, or other organizations that need to know.

Confirm the Details

It never hurts to check your list twice. Double-check all the details of your move, such as when movers will arrive, when you can move into your new home or apartment, and any other factors that can impact your relocation process.

Start Packing

Box up and set aside items that don’t get daily use, like home décor, out-of-season clothing, and books. You can start packing these items to get a head start, making less to do in the final days before your move.

Keep the Lights On

Contact your utility providers to set up your new home’s electricity, gas, and other services. Whether signing up for a new plan or just transferring your current service, you want to make sure the power will be on when you arrive.

Get Connected

Utilities aren’t the only things you need to set up in your new home before you arrive. Compare rates for high-speed internet and cable packages for the services you need and the best deals. Schedule installation for before you arrive or soon after.

Wrap It Up

Finish packing your possessions using colored labels so movers can easily see which boxes go in which rooms. Plan how to lay out the rooms and arrange furniture—if you already have an idea for organizing your belongings, you will feel more prepared when you arrive.

Check Out

Remove any remaining items in your current home that you aren’t taking, and make sure any trash is taken out. Give the space one final cleaning, including sweeping and vacuuming, to leave your old home in the best shape possible for its new residents. Finally, go through the house and double-check for any forgotten belongings.
